Our central aim is the maintenance of value-for-money services. Nevertheless, we want to meet rising quality requirements. We wish to offer a demand-conscious, innovative programme of services for our guests that is attractive and offers genuine alternatives when compared to other forms of accommodation. In other words: to cultivate simplicity. We attach particular importance to transparent structures, personal management of our hostels, and a pleasant atmosphere.

Burgdorf Castle Youth Hostel

In 2020, the network of the Swiss Youth Hostels consisted of 52 hostels with a total of 6,198 beds. The Swiss Youth Hostels Association operated 46 own hostels, totalling 5,576 beds; 6 youth hostels with a total of 622 beds belonged to the network as franchisees.

Summer 2020
“Bienenkorb”
A special gem, the “Bienenkorb” was created in Grindelwald, a detached double room with a view of the north face of the Eiger and the starlit sky. The project was realised within a very short time as part of Switzerland Tourism's "A Million Stars Hotel" campaign and has been in great demand. The “Bienenkorb” was continuously occupied from launch right up to season end.

Le Bémont Youth Hostel
After 56 years, Le Bémont Youth Hostel had to close at the end of the season. The required investments for safety and substance maintenance were no longer financially viable.

Franchise hostels
The Bellinzona, Engelberg, Fiesch (up to 31.12.2020), Lugano, Romanshorn and Trin youth hostels operate their establishments according to the Swiss Youth Hostels’ principles, although at their own expense and risk. As they satisfy the service and quality principles, they are allowed to use the word and figurative marks of the Swiss Youth Hostels. The mutual rights and obligations are laid down in a franchise agreement.

Burgdorf Castle
Youth Hostel

After the COVID pandemic delayed renovation and installation work, Burgdorf Castle Youth Hostel was able to welcome its first overnight guests on 28 May 2020. The official opening ceremony took place on 13 June 2020 and a piece of Swiss history was experienced by all. Castle Burgdorf has often been converted and re-purposed in its 800-year history, but until now the town’s landmark was reserved for the authorities. The conversion has enabled the preservation of the medieval castle complex and made it accessible to the public. The castle thus reclaims its important place in the history and architecture of the Canton of Bern and Switzerland. Burgdorf architect firm Atelier G + S were responsible for the conversion. Their “Open Castle Burgdorf” project emerged as the winner in the competition held by Burgdorf for the redevelopment of their castle. In addition to the youth hostel with 115 beds, the newly designed museum is a further core element of the conversion. In addition, there is a public restaurant and various rooms for events and conferences.

The new offer aroused great interest among the guests from the very first hour. The hostel has already accommodated and entertained many satisfied guests. Birthdays and weddings were celebrated, and many guests explored a piece of Swiss cultural heritage. Due to the COVID measures to contain the pandemic, the museum, public restaurant and event area had to close from 22 December 2020. The youth hostel remained open.

Rapperswil-Jona
Youth Hostel

The town of Rapperswil-Jona as owner of the youth hostel approved the conversion of the youth hostel in 2019 with a CHF 2.5 million loan. Work started after the end of the season on 19 October 2020. Following a slightly extended seasonal closure over the winter, the youth hostel is to open again on 30 April 2021. According to the plans of Lehmann Springer Architekten AG, guests will then be welcomed in a newly designed foyer with restaurant and various communal areas on the ground floor. The rooms were renovated, and new double and family rooms with en-suite bathrooms are now also available. The entire youth hostel has barrier-free access.

Aua Grava Laax

Hostel3000 & Aua Grava Laax

After Saas-Fee, the Aua Grava and wellnessHostel3000 is the second wellness hostel worldwide. The project was launched in June 2017, when the Municipal Assembly of Laax approved the credit for a project competition. The project “Mira Val” from SSA architects AG Basel with Ferrari Gartmann Ingenieure AG Chur emerged as the winner. With the affiliation of the new wellness hostel to the fully renovated indoor pool, the municipality of Laax, as the owner, extended the accommodation and leisure programme in the municipality and used important synergies efficiently and economically. The wellnessHostel3000 offers its guests a total of 158 beds in 51 rooms. 16 rooms have unobstructed access in the house, designed as handicapped accessible. The 25-metre indoor swimming pool and adventure slide was completely renovated and a toddlers’ pool added. New additions include a spacious wellness area and excellently equipped fitness centre.

The Aua Grava indoor swimming pool with its new wellness and fitness area, as well as the new wellnessHostel3000 and restaurant Biblau opened on 18 December 2020 in compliance with the protection concept and have since been open to overnight guests. Since then, demand has been high and many satisfied guests soon became regulars. Due to the COVID pandemic, both the indoor pool, including the wellness and fitness area, and the restaurant will remain closed to external guests for the time being.

Schaan-Vaduz
Youth Hostel

After it was decided in 2015 that Schaan-Vaduz youth hostel, which was in need of renovation, would give way to a new building, an architectural competition was held in 2018. The jury decided in favour of the “Einstein” project from the architecture firm Erhart + Partner AG in Vaduz. The simple and distinctive architectural concept and the concise design of the winning project was convincing. It will be designed for 120 beds, in exclusive standard with double, family and multi-bedrooms. The building loan of CHF 9.13 million was granted. Construction of the replacement building started on 8 November 2019. The opening will be on 1 April 2021.
