Beehive Grindelwald Youth Hostel

The beginning of 2022 was again shaped to a large extent by the continuation of the COVID pandemic. Comprehensive restrictions on freedom of travel remained and there was a general recommendation against school camps. This resulted in 80% fewer overnight stays by school camps in January 2022 relative to 2019 and the other segments groups, families and solo travellers were also subdued. The easing of measures outside Switzerland and envisaged lifting of all COVID-19 measures in Switzerland had an increasingly positive influence on bookings. Overnight stays in Swiss youth hostels had returned to pre-COVID-19 levels as early as February 2022. Many teachers acted flexibly and moved the school camps back from the start of the year to March 2022. This was especially well received by the pupils. Extra-curricular activities and school camps are particularly important following this extraordinary time in order to promote class cohesion and explore culture and nature.

We observe the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine with bewilderment and great dismay. In response to the major influx of refugees, the Swiss Youth Hostels have decided to accommodate refugees in a straightforward manner and offer them short-term overnight accommodation until they have completed the necessary paperwork and registration. We thereby contribute to alleviating the incomprehensible suffering of the people from Ukraine in need of protection.

Current events and the progression of the pandemic over the past two years show that our attractively priced offering for sustainable accommodation and catering for young people and families makes a significant contribution to the education of young people and to co-existence. By facilitating encounters, exchange and shared experiences, we enable people to get to know each other and gain insights into local life, culture and nature. This leads to mutual understanding and friendships across borders and language barriers. This helps make people aware of the need to deliberately take people, nature and the environment into consideration.

Our gastronomy offering Yoummi was launched in 2022. Balanced, sustainable, varied and attractively priced: these are the cornerstones of the Swiss Youth Hostels’ dining concept. The basis of the menus is always vegetarian and vegan if requested. Furthermore, most menus are also offered with meat. Gluten and lactose-free versions of all the menus are always available on request. Our guests can have local drinking water free of charge at our popular water stations. The offer from our new self-kiosks is currently available in the Brienz, Rapperswil-Jona, Schaan-Vaduz, Valbella and Zermatt youth hostels. There are plans to implement more at other locations. The breakfast and lunch package will follow in the course of 2022 with an extended and additional vegan and vegetarian offering.

On 1 April 2022, the new Saignelégier Youth Hostel opened its doors as part of the Franches-Montagne leisure centre. Saignelégier is the ideal location for sports enthusiasts and optimally complements our offering in the Jura. Our third wellness hostel in St-Luc opens on 16 July 2022. It is in the renovated historic Grand-Hotel with a view of the imperial crown in the Valais Alps.

In 2022, we again offer sustainable travel experiences and enriching encounters in Switzerland’s most beautiful locations to as many people as possible. We look forward to your visit! See you soon in one of our youth hostels!
